The Roman Empire, in his time, brought to French winemaking processes great technological improvements that revolutionized traditional methods. The Duke of Burgundy, at the time of his dissent, aimed to unify Burgundy region to Belgium and Netherlands, to provide access to the sea for his duchy, in order to facilitate the distribution of Burgundy wines.
