Pessac Léognan

pessac-leognanCorresponding to the northern part of Graves (formerly called High-Low), areas of Pessac and Leognan constitute an appellation since 1987, inspired by those of Medoc region.

Its creation, which could be justified by its historical role (former suburban vineyards that produced the Medieval clarets), is due to the originality of its soils. Terraces that we found further south give way to a more rugged topography. The area between Martillac and Mérignac consists in an archipelago of gravel ridges that have excellent skills in their soils for wine making activities, composed by mixed pebbles and steep slopes that ensure excellent drainage.

The originality of Pessac-Leognan has been noticed by specialists before the creation of the appellation. Thus, when the 1855 classification appeared, Haut-Brion was the only castle to be classified without being produced in Medoc area. Then, when, in 1959, sixteen chateaux from Graves area were added to this classification, all were from the area of the current appellation Pessac-Leognan.

Red wines have the usual characteristics of Graves appellation differing in their bouquet, their smoothness and their structure. As for the dry whites, they are suitable for barrel aging which allows them to acquire complex aromas, with delicate notes of juniper and lime.
